Week 5 Botanical Illustration Course

This assignment had us use an apple and a pine cone.  Then place a light source different directions and document what happened to the subject in regards to shading and highlighting.

This was a more complex assignment.  Our first complex pen and ink with an ink wash.  It took me about 6 hours to complete this painting.  It was so much fun.  There are about 35 layers of wash on this piece.  For the cantaloupe veining I decided to tackle the problem by using a skilll developed in one of our first assignments, blind contour drawing.  It made the daunting tasks so much fun to really get into the flow of the contours.

Our course is almost at the end.  Next week our final project is due.  I have decided to really challenge myself by using some Botanical Illustrations from books I have collected and come up with my own composition of a Tithonia "Mexican Sunflower."  It will be my first colored piece submitted for review.
